Hezekiah Walker Coming to Kampala

17 June 2014

By Felix Eupal

Gospel must be wearing an ear to ear smile because after Don Moen thrilling Kampala just the other week, another gospel power-house is set for Kampala.

Hezekiah Walker will be performing live at Liberty Church, Lugala, on June 27, it was announced last week. The day before, Walker will be involved in a cancer charity dinner at Speke Resort Munyonyo. Cancer has recently been identified as an emerging major health issue in a country traditionally more afraid of malaria and communicable conditions such as HIV/Aids.

Walker will be helping the fight against cancer, alongside a string of other gospel artistes including Exodus and Judith Babirye. Many will ask who Walker is, but if you listen to gospel music, you have most probably listened to his music. Walker is a Grammy award-winning choir director and church pastor.

With a career spanning over three decades, Walker has collaborated with Justin Timberlake, P Diddy and Whitney Houston; he recorded more than a dozen chart-topping albums and became the face of the black Gospel choir with his classic hits Souled Out, Grateful and I Need You To Survive.

His most recent collection, titled Azusa The Next Generation, is philosophically pondering the past generations of believers who influenced his life - like the late Bishop Kenneth Moales, to whom the CD is dedicated.

The first Azusa generation was that pioneering multi-racial sect that gathered at a rundown horse stable at 312 Azusa Street in a Los Angeles ghetto in spring 1906.

There one-eyed preacher William J Seymour kicked off a Pentecostal revival that lingered for almost 10 years and gave birth to a national Pentecostal Movement espousing a holiness lifestyle, speaking in tongues, faith healing and admonitions of an impending Rapture.

In a manner, Walker is repackaging this faith that kept him during his adolescence, and making it relatable to today's youth. Patrons will have to part with Shs 10,000 for the concert, whose proceeds will go towards the fight against cancer.
